Evidence Category 1: Historical Death of Jesus

Skeptic claim:

“Jesus probably didn’t even exist, or at least didn’t die by crucifixion.”

Opening Columbo Probe:

“When you say you’re not sure Jesus really died, what sources are you working from?”

Why this works

Most skeptics have not read Tacitus, Josephus, Lucian, or Mara bar Serapion. This question gently surfaces that gap without embarrassing them. It also creates a natural opening for you to introduce sources they may not know.

Follow-Up Steering Questions

Are you aware that we have four non-Christian ancient sources that confirm Jesus died under Pontius Pilate — including Tacitus, who was openly hostile to Christianity?
If Tacitus had nothing to gain from confirming the crucifixion — and in fact was mocking Christians — why would you think he’d fabricate that detail?
How do you account for the fact that no ancient source, hostile or friendly, ever denied that Jesus was crucified? Even the earliest opponents of Christianity assumed the death happened.
What would it take for you to accept a historical event as having occurred? Do you apply those same standards to other ancient events?
If the crucifixion is the most multiply-confirmed fact about Jesus in ancient history — attested by Jews, Romans, and pagans who had no reason to help Christians — what’s the basis for doubting it?

Sample Dialogue

Skeptic: I’m not sure Jesus even existed, let alone was crucified.

You: That’s interesting — what sources are you working from when you say that?

Skeptic: I’ve just heard that the Gospels are unreliable.

You: That’s fair. But here’s a question — aside from the Gospels, are you aware of the Roman historian Tacitus? He’s considered one of the most reliable historians of the ancient world, and he explicitly records that ‘Christus suffered the extreme penalty under Pontius Pilatus.’ He was writing to a Roman audience that had no interest in defending Christians. Why would he make that up?

Apologetics Payoff

The crucifixion is not a Christian claim — it is an ancient historical fact confirmed by hostile, non-Christian sources. Any alternative theory must begin by accepting the death. This sets the table for every subsequent question.
